Write Skew
3 tags
1 category
Write skew occurs when concurrent transactions read overlapping state, make decisions from that state, and update different records in a way that breaks a shared rule. Two on-call workers might each see that the other is available and independently mark themselves unavailable.
Neither overwrites the other’s row, yet the final state has no available worker. Serializable execution or appropriately chosen locking can prevent this anomaly.
