Vector Clock

1 category
A vector clock tracks logical progress for several participants using a collection of counters. Comparing two vectors can identify that one event causally precedes another, or that the events are concurrent when neither vector dominates the other.
Replicated systems use such information to detect versions that require conflict resolution. Tracking participants has storage and membership costs, and an ordinary timestamp is not a substitute for the vector’s causal information.
