Tombstone

1 category
A tombstone records a deletion instead of immediately removing every physical copy of the deleted value. An LSM engine can append a tombstone so readers know an older record must no longer be returned.
Replicated databases can also use deletion markers to prevent an older replica from resurrecting removed data. Reclaiming the marker safely requires the system’s retention and synchronization conditions to be satisfied, rather than merely waiting an arbitrary short time.
