Read Amplification

1 category
Read amplification describes extra internal read work required to answer a logical application read. A key lookup might inspect several sorted files, index blocks, or storage pages before finding the current value.
The measure can refer to bytes, I/O operations, or structures examined, so comparisons need a stated definition. Indexes, filters, caches, and compaction reduce different parts of that work and can impose additional memory or write costs.
