Lock Convoy

3 tags 1 category

A lock convoy forms when threads repeatedly queue behind one contended lock and incur scheduling delays as ownership passes between them. Throughput can remain poor even when each critical section is short because waking and scheduling the next waiter adds overhead.

Reducing shared work, shortening the protected section, or changing the concurrency design can help. The useful diagnosis is sustained contention and handoff cost, rather than simply the presence of any lock.
