Load Shedding

3 tags 1 category

Load shedding deliberately rejects or drops selected work when a system cannot safely process everything arriving. Preserving capacity for useful requests can produce better outcomes than letting every request wait until it times out.

A service might reject optional background work while retaining essential operations. The policy should define priorities and expose rejected traffic in metrics so apparent improvements in latency are not mistaken for successful processing of all demand.
