Lamport Timestamp

1 category
A Lamport timestamp is a logical counter advanced for local events and adjusted when messages arrive. If one event causally precedes another, its timestamp is smaller under the algorithm’s rules.
The reverse inference is not valid: smaller timestamps alone do not prove a causal relationship. A participant identifier can break ties to create a total ordering when needed, but that additional ordering includes events that may have been concurrent.
