HTTP is the application-layer protocol used to exchange requests and responses for web resources. Its semantics define methods, status codes, headers, representations, and caching behavior. HTTP/1.1, HTTP/2, and HTTP/3 share those semantics while using different connection and message transports. A WordPress REST endpoint uses HTTP to express retrieval or mutation and report the outcome to its client.
