Hedged Request

1 category
A hedged request sends an additional attempt for the same operation when the first attempt is taking unusually long. The caller can use the first acceptable result and cancel or ignore the remaining attempt.
This reduces some tail delays when replicas have independent slowdowns, but it increases load and can worsen shared overload. Hedging is easiest to justify for safe reads; writes need protection against duplicate effects.
