Hazard Pointer

1 category
A hazard pointer announces that a thread may access a particular shared object so another thread does not reclaim that object’s memory too early. Removed objects are retired and freed only after the reclamation procedure establishes that no relevant hazard pointer protects them.
The technique supports some lock-free data structures while avoiding unsafe dereferences of freed memory. Correct publication and validation steps are essential; simply storing a pointer somewhere is not sufficient.
