Fencing Token

3 tags 1 category

A fencing token is a monotonically increasing number issued with ownership of a protected resource. The resource rejects operations carrying an older token after a newer owner has acted.

This protects against a worker that pauses long enough for its lease to expire and later resumes with stale ownership. The check must happen at the resource that performs the protected action; merely generating tokens in the locking service does not stop stale writes.
