Distributed Lock

3 tags 1 category

A distributed lock coordinates access to a resource across processes or machines. For example, multiple application servers may use one lock to avoid rebuilding the same glossary cache concurrently.

Correctness depends on the lock service’s guarantees and on how clients handle crashes, pauses, lease expiry, and lost connectivity. A lock that reduces duplicate work is not automatically strong enough to protect a critical shared write without fencing or equivalent validation.
