Compare-and-Swap

3 tags 1 category

Compare-and-swap is an atomic operation that replaces a value only if it still equals an expected value. The comparison and replacement occur as one indivisible step, preventing another writer from slipping between them.

A worker can use the operation to claim a job only while its status is still unclaimed. The caller must handle comparison failure, and repeated values can require extra version information to avoid the ABA problem.
