Canonical Serialization
3 tags
1 category
Canonical serialization assigns a deterministic byte representation to data according to a defined set of rules. Two equivalent objects can then produce the same bytes for hashing or signing despite differences in ordinary formatting or property order.
The rules must cover details such as string encoding and number representation. Canonicalization is not the same as arbitrary whitespace removal, and different schemes can make different choices about what constitutes equivalent input.
