Cache Stampede
3 tags
1 category
A cache stampede occurs when many callers encounter the same missing or expired value and independently regenerate it. The sudden duplicate work can overload the database or an upstream service precisely when the cache is least helpful.
Request coalescing, controlled refresh, and carefully scoped locks can reduce the burst. A mitigation must also recover when the designated loader fails, or the attempted protection can leave callers waiting indefinitely.
