Backward Compatibility

1 category
Backward compatibility means a newer version continues to support the existing interfaces and stored data promised by the project. A plugin change can affect PHP callbacks, REST responses, settings, or frontend markup. Compatibility should be judged against an explicit supported contract. Preserving a function name is insufficient if its return type or required permission changes unexpectedly.
