ABA Problem

3 tags 1 category

The ABA problem occurs when a value changes from A to B and back to A before a comparison checks it. A compare-and-swap can then succeed because the visible value matches, even though the underlying object or state changed in between.

This matters when pointer reuse or removal invalidates an assumption about identity. Version tags and suitable memory-reclamation strategies can help distinguish an unchanged value from a reused representation.
